When almost 12 years ago Piero Lunghi proposed to organize a conference in Europe on fuel cells, we were all both excited about the idea and thrilled about the commitment. Piero was sure about the success of the conference and we were all driven by his enthusiasm.

In December 2005 the “1st European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Conference” took place in Rome and was attended by an incredibly broad (significantly broader than expected) group of advanced professionals and students in the fuel cell area of research.

The 2nd edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Conference” in 2007, equally successful in terms of attendance, was tragically marked by the death of Piero, who passed away in a car accident on November 9th 2007, on the way to join us for the final preparatory meeting of EFC07.

With the 3rd edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Conference”, the conference achieved the full maturity expected, becoming one of the most important scientific events in the area of fuel cells, marked by a wide participation of renowned researchers, scientists and major stakeholders and by over 180 contributions by leading experts in the field of fuel cells. The new title “Piero Lunghi Conference” is a tribute to our friend Piero, a great man and scientist, whose enthusiasm and determination made the idea a reality.

The 4th edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Piero Lunghi Conference & Exhibition” in 2011 was a huge success. That year’s edition combined the core-event represented by the scientific conference with the exhibition area, a new entry to the EFC, where research, industry and market met. That was just the first experiment but it got, again, a significantly broader than expected interest. From a scientific point of view, we received 226 abstracts and this made EFC an internationally recognized point of reference for fuel cell scientific community. Finally, we chose a beautiful new congress location to provide our attendees with immediate access to the very heart of the Eternal City.

In addition to the over 250 participants who assisted to the 142 oral presentations and to the 60 contributes of the poster session, the 5th edition of “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Piero Lunghi Conference & Exhibition” in 2013  featured the presence of 185 attendees who took part to the side-events that supplemented the EFC13:
• International Workshop “INTEGRATING NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL APPROACHES FOR THE DESIGN OF NEXT GENERATION FUEL CELLS”;
• The workshop “Hydrogen and Fuel Cell: what opportunities for Italy?”, aimed at improving the knowledge on the European, National and local programs on hydrogen-related technologies, as well as to present the state of the research in Italy and the public and private project under execution;
• Dissemination and promotion of projects funded by the European Commission and FCH, which finished with the Project Cocktail held on December 12th.

The 6th edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Piero Lunghi Conference & Exhibition” in 2015 moved to Naples (Italy), from 16th to 18th December, 2015. It was organized by ATENA (High Technology District in the field of Energy and Environment), ENEA (the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), University of Perugia and University “Parthenope” of Naples, under the coordination of Dr. Angelo Moreno (Conference Chairman).
EFC15 welcomed more than 300 participants from all over the world, with 140 lectures and 100 posters presenting the latest achievements and updated perspectives in fuel cell technology. The core part of the event focused on material development, laboratory tests and modeling as well as looking at innovative fuels, fuel processing and system design.  Environmental issues specifically addressed in certain fuel cell applications were part of the "decarbonizing society" track. Once again, many new ideas and concepts were offered for presentation at EFC15, with a special full-day session dedicated to the evolving world of microbial fuel cells.

The 7th edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Piero Lunghi Conference & Exhibition,” EFC17, was held in Naples (Italy), from 12th to 15th Dec. 2017. It was organized by ATENA, ENEA, University of Perugia and University “Parthenope” of Naples, under the chairmanship of Dr. Angelo Moreno. In accordance with the positive trend of past editions, EFC17 welcomed more than 350 participants from all over the world. Covering the entire spectrum of research, development, demonstration and deployment, 150 lectures and 100 posters were selected for their significance, presenting the latest achievements and updated perspectives in fuel cell technology.

The 8th edition of the “European Fuel Cells Technology & Applications Piero Lunghi Conference” was held in Naples (Italy), from 9th to 11th Dec. 2019. It was organized again by ATENA, ENEA, University of Perugia and University “Parthenope” of Naples, and Dr. Angelo Moreno confirmed his honorary role as the one and only Conference Chairman. EFC19 welcomed more than 300 participants from all over the world and established it as the premier Italian fuel cell event attracting targeted, high-value visitors from all around the world and, especially, from the most active Countries in the sector, including the US, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, India, Africa and China.

The 9th edition of the “European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Piero Lunghi Conference” was held remotely, from 15th to 17th December, 2021. It was organized by ATENA (High Technology District in the field of Energy and Environment), ENEA (the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and SustainableEconomic Development), University of Perugia and University “Parthenope” of Naples, under the coordination of Dr. Viviana Cigolotti and Dr. Stephen McPhail (Conference Chairmen).
In accordance with the positive past editions’ trend, EFC21 has welcomed more than 200 participants from all over the world. Covering the entire spectrum of research, development, demonstration and deployment, 150 lectures and 50 posters were selected for their significance, presenting the latest achievements and updated perspectives in fuel cell technology. The core part of the event focused on the achieved development in different applications: mobility, hydrogen, infrastructure, energy storage, energy generation, microbial & enzymatic bio-electrochemical systems, cross cutting and overarching issues.
